Well finally stopped being lazy and decided to start trying to bike again, hopefully so I can commute to work on my bike, since I live 4 miles from work should be a cake walk. Rode 5 miles last night and felt ok afterwards. Still kept my average that I had back in July, so I am guessing I could make it to work in about 10 – 15 minutes which is way easier than what I used to do years ago, plus the road is flatish, so that will help too (google says 82′ incline and 260′ decline to work) so that will be easy. Just need to stop being lazy. Anyway, enough about that let me put down the particulars of the ride last night for posterity.

4.48 miles in 15 minutes so about 18 mph

Weighed 205.8 this morning.

Ok I think I need to start and try to bike again, it seems my company is moving my office less than 5 miles from my house with good roads and decent shoulders between so I guess I will try to bike to work off and on. Should be easy rides to and from although I need to figure out how to transport my laptop back and forth but will figure it out. I jumped on the indoor trainer and biked for 15 minutes and luckily I did not feel like I was going to die this time, so it seems this time will be easier, but we shall see.

First thing I got was a sport cap from Pace, just like this one…. http://www.amazon.com/Pace-Classic-Cycling-Jalapeno-Black/dp/B001TIBQIM/ref=sr_1_5?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1313425699&sr=1-5 I like how small it folds down to and should be very easy to carry on rides so my helmet head gets hidden. The next thing I bought was a mirror for my helmet like this one… http://www.amazon.com/Cycleaware-Reflex-Bicycle-Helmet-Mirror/dp/B00012343C . I had a mirror on my handlebar but I am very used to the helmet seems more natural. And the third thing I bought, which I haven’t received yet is Sigma BC 1609 Cadence Bicycle Speedometer, which is this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030CHBM0 It seems to be one of the better ones for the price and what it offers, temperature all kinds of timing functions, distance functions, and even cadence and some trip functionality, which I need to look at in more detail because it sounds like it could be very interesting. I also like the fact it can mount on the handlebar or stem, it also received very good reviews so we shall see. I am looking forward to using the cadence stuff to see how well I do, and hopefully will help me shift better. Will let you know how it goes at a later time.

Ok finally got the nerve up to finally take my shoes out for a ride and I must say, that after all of the worrying about falling over etc. it is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. It almost feels natural to pull my shoes out of the cleats and get them to the road. Now I do realize they are on the easiest setting so that may have something to do with it, but for now I am pleasantly surprised at how it went. Now I need to start riding again, but I am working so much now that only leaves the weekends, so I need to prioritize it a bit more now.

I must say the bike feels very good, although I do think it may be a bit too small for me. The components make it feel like a very nice bike, I just wonder how it will feel over long rides. I think it is an entry level Bianchi, but it has Shimano 105 hubs front and back and the tires are nice as well, and the 8 speed cassette is a Hyperglide and shifts very nice,  just wish the frame was 2″ taller. Maybe I swap the components from the Fuji and make the Fuji have the 105s etc. So now I need a much longer ride to see how I feel, I only rode 3 miles Sunday since it was with my two sons and one of them is only 11 and rides a single speed, but my oldest (17) rode my Fuji and he seems like he can go longer distances, will have to see if I can get him to ride with me, I would just hate it if something happened to him though. Until later, have a good day, thanks for reading.

Well went yard saling today and came upon a bike, a 16 speed road bike by Bianchi. Seems like maybe my Vintage Fuji is being replaced by a Vintage Bianchi, just need to give it a good cleaning and then check out all of the components and change out the pedals since they are SPD cleats and I have never ridden with anything but cages. I cannot wait to get this one on the road to see how much different it is than the fuji. …Ok, I have cleaned it up and made it road ready, but seems like it may be too small of a frame for me, will need to log some miles to see how it feels, but seems to ride pretty nice, but my legs feel too far under me right now.

I want to document my biking so others can see what it is like to take it up and can see they are not alone in the issues they may face and so that hopefully they will not give up too soon. Since my first ride in late April of this year where I was ready to fall over dead, I have logged a total of 20 miles and have made great strides in being able to start to ride longer distances. Now I do realize 20 miles is what many people can do in one ride, but I am following the baby steps approach to biking, don’t get me wrong it is very disappointing and aggravating to sit and watch other bikers zooming all over, able to climb decent size hills and ride long distances, but I am still building myself up for that and only time will tell. Honestly I think I try to ride too fast and that is something to get used to, I can average 13-15 mph over these 5+ mile trips, but hopefully this will help me out in the long run. Hills are still difficult, but getting better, just need to use the right gear. Hopefully, someone will read this and will understand they are not alone in having a hard time starting to ride.

Now to the particulars, since the last time I wrote, 5/24, I have logged 15 miles and have set personal bests on a number of fronts including fastest time around my short 1.8 mile loop of 6:42, fastest average speed over the ride of 16.02 mph, I also cut my time from almost 23 minutes for 3 short loops down to 21 minutes, another best I set is most miles ridden in one day which 7.2 miles, which I am going to try to go over 10 tonight. Keep in mind we have just had the highest temperatures in my area so far for the year, made it to over 95 for a few days with high humidity and I still set these bests. Like I said baby steps, now I need to start to get some proper clothes for riding, baby steps on that as well.

Last night, 5/24/2011, I decided to take a shorter ride and ride as many times as I could, so I rode a 1.8 mile small loop 3 times, getting me 5.5 miles of riding in with very little rest, I felt much better and didn’t feel like I was going to die! I also cut my time from 30 mins in April to 23 minutes last night, so things are looking up right now, I also lowered my times for each lap from 8 minutes to 7.5 minutes to 7.25 minutes, it seems I am getting my legs back.

I am setting my sights on a century, maybe the monument to monument century next May and also looking at joining a local biking group soon, but I do not want to be in this bad of shape, I do not want to embarrass myself just yet. Another few times riding short trips to build myself up and then pull a larger maybe a 15 mile trip and see how it goes and then maybe I will join http://www.chesapeakespokes.org/ a local biking group.

This riding has also made it so that I made a profile on map my ride, http://www.mapmyride.com/profile/hometownnerd/
